Florida Suicide Prevention Implementation Project
The Florida Suicide Prevention Implementation Project (FSPIP) is a collaborative effort between the Louis de la Parte Florida Mental Health Institute (FMHI) at the University of South Florida, the Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention and the Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council to implement the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy on the local level. This project serves as the avenue through which the state plan is rooted and sustained in the community.
The FSPIP began in July 2007, the same month the Florida Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council was created in statute. It was imperative to establish the priorities of the Council so the project turned to a scientific participatory process called concept mapping. At the first meeting of the Florida Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council, members were asked to list the activities and tasks necessary to move the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy into ongoing community programs and/or initiatives. Their responses were then posted on a Web site for additional input from Council members, and other suicide prevention stakeholders throughout the state were then asked to sort the responses into logical groups and also to rate the responses in terms of importance, ease of implementation, and impact to reducing the suicide rate. The sorted and rated categories were then analyzed using a specialized computer program developed for this purpose.
Outputs of the concept mapping process are used by the Council and communities throughout Florida to implement or accelerate existing suicide prevention efforts. There now exists a prioritized list of 125 activities that can be found at the project Web site. Moving forward, the FSPIP will continue to build community capacity to enable the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy to be implemented at the local level in many Florida counties. It is anticipated that the Implementation Plan will assist communities to more effectively implement suicide prevention activities in their local area and help Florida implement its state plan. It encompasses a community mobilization process which prepares communities to implement suicide prevention activities in their area.

Suicide Prevention Menu of Actions
In 2007, the Florida Statewide Office of Suicide Prevention, the Suicide Prevention Coordinating Council, and other stakeholders brainstormed actions to promote the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy. First, participants responded to the statement "In order to move the Florida Suicide Prevention Strategy into ongoing community programs and/or initiatives, a specific activity/task that should occur is..." Participants later sorted the responses into categories and rated each response for importance and ease of implementation.
