Did you know that...?
- One out of every eight adolescents in the U.S. suffers from depression.
- Only one out of three depressed teens receives any kind of treatment.
- Untreated depression is a leading cause of teen suicide.
As high school faculty or staff, you and your colleagues are in a unique position to help your students recognize depression in themselves or their friends, and encourage them to get help for this common and treatable problem.
This FREE 60-minute webinar on Teen Depression and Suicide Risk is designed to show teachers, counselors, school nurses, psychologists and other school personnel how they can effectively incorporate depression education into the classroom, using a ground-breaking new film, More Than Sad: Teen Depression, developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The film features vignettes of four teens that will help students recognize the varied signs and symptoms of depression, reduce their misconceptions and apprehensions about treatment and promote help-seeking behavior.
Following completion of the webinar and a brief feedback form, participants will receive a complimentary copy of More Than Sad: Teen Depression (valued at $49.99) to use with your students. The film comes packaged with easy-to-use materials, including a sample lesson plan, handouts and a pre-post quiz, that will maximize students’ educational experience.

Adolescent Depression & Suicide: Screening, Assessment and Intervention
The Ganley Foundation is proud to announce our partnership with the Melissa Institute for the 14th Annual May Conference on May 7, 2010 entitled Adolescent Depression & Suicide: Screening, Assessment and Intervention.
A leading panel of national experts will come together to discuss early detection, diagnosis, treatment of depression, and suicide prevention. Through a series of presentations, panel discussion, and question & answer sessions, we will explore those early predictors of depression that may appear in children as well as co-morbidity factors, which may lead to suicidal behavior. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth overall ages 10-25. With 20% of adolescents experiencing clinical depression prior to graduating high school there is an increasing need to better address these mental health needs in our youth. This conference will attempt to meet that challenge.
The 14th Annual May Conference will be held on May 7, 2010 at the Victor E. Clarke Education Center, located at South Miami Hospital, 6200 Southwest 73rd Street. Our target audience includes professionals within the fields of education, mental health, social services, law enforcement, judicial system, and medical fields. Continuing education credits are available and registration information for this conference will be available at melissainstitute.org and at ganleyfoundation.org.
